The Importance of Activity in Dementia
Even when cognitive abilities decline due to Alzheimer’s or dementia, individuals still retain the capacity to function and benefit from engagement. Activity is crucial for maintaining both physical and mental well-being, and can range from everyday tasks and simple walks in nature to more structured events.
Why Activity in Dementia Matters
Use It or Lose It The common healthcare phrase “use it or lose it” underscores the importance of staying active. While our intention to assist in daily chores is well-meaning, over-assistance can hinder a person’s ability to retain their skills. Encouraging them to engage in daily tasks helps preserve their independence and abilities for as long as possible.
Providing a Structured Routine A structured routine can reduce confusion and provide stability, helping individuals stay oriented to time and place. This consistency fosters a sense of security and helps in managing the effects of dementia.
Easing frustration and fostering a sense of accomplishment As dementia progresses, individuals may experience a decline in cognitive functions, leading to feelings of frustration or becoming a burden. Involvement in meaningful activities can uplift their mood and improve their lifestyle, offering a sense of purpose and productivity.
Reducing Challenging Behaviours Engaging in enjoyable activities can help mitigate common behavioral challenges associated with dementia, such as restlessness, agitation, and confusion. Keeping them occupied with activities they love, helps channel their energy positively and manage behaviours effectively.
